 What is a command prompt?


Command prompt (cmd.exe) or windows command processor is widely used in windows operating systems for troubleshooting and various other administrative functions. Command prompt supports a large number of commands depending on the operating system and version. It not only supports the administrative functions, but also supports basic user functions like creating files, folders, navigating in folders and running batch functions.

1. Create a desktop shortcut for command prompt

Try creating a desktop shortcut for command Prompt(cmd.exe). Follow the below steps to create command prompt desktop shortcut

Right click on the desktop blank space and click new shortcut.

Type "cmd.exe" and then click next and click Finish.

If you want to open the command prompt in administrative mode, right click on the shortcut created in the previous step and select properties.

Click on the Shortcut tab and select Advanced. Check the box "Run as Administrator" to always open the command prompt in Administrative mode.

2. Restart the computer

Restarting the computer will reset the processor and also will release unwanted memory and storage space. System registry will also get reset when the computer is restarted. Command prompt not opening issue will also be most probably solved when the computer is restarted. 

3. Disable Antivirus Software

A few antivirus software prevents some special utilities and programs from running normally in the computer. Command prompt can also be blocked by some of the antivirus software. So it is a recommendable step to try disabling the antivirus software temporarily and try opening the command prompt.

4. Create New user account

Command prompt may be working in some user accounts and hence we can open command prompt from different user accounts. If the alternate user account is not available, we can create new user accounts in windows.

5. Restart  the computer in safe mode

Suppose any new applications or programs have been installed recently, they may prevent the command prompt to open. 

Click on the start menu and then click on the power icon, then press the shift key and click on restart option.

Thereafter your computer will reboot to a blue screen, you can click the Troubleshoot option and advanced options, and then click startup setting and restart.

Thereafter, press the F4 button to boot your computer into safe mode. Then start your computer in a safe mode and run the command prompt.

If the command prompt is working in the safe mode, then uninstalling the recently installed software or program will enable the command prompt working.
